What is Atopic Dermatitis?

Atopic dermatitis, more commonly known as eczema, is a common skin condition that takes the form of a red, itchy rash. Over 10% of children experience eczema. Some common triggers that may cause eczema flares include dry weather, smoke/pollutants, stress, certain soaps or detergents, and certain clothing fabrics. Though the cause of eczema is not well understood, at the core, individuals with atopic dermatitis have skin abnormalities that reduce the skin’s ability to form an appropriate barrier with the external environment. There are many ways to manage eczema, including topical, oral, and injectable medications as well as light therapy.
