Soy protein may improve skin aging and hydration!
Recently, one of our studies exploring the potential benefits of soy protein on skin health was published in the Nutrients journal. In this study, we examined the impact of dietary soy protein supplementation on skin health. Forty-four postmenopausal women between the ages of 50-70 took part in this six-month long study. Half of the study participants consumed a soy protein supplement and the other half consumed a casein supplement. Casein is the main protein present in mammalian milk while soy is often found in tofu, edamame, and of course, soy milk!
We found that women who consumed the soy protein supplement experienced a decrease in wrinkle severity and facial pigment intensity as well as an increase in overall skin hydration. It is possible that soy may lead to these skin benefits due to its antioxidative and collagen-promoting properties. Thus, consumption of soy protein may be beneficial to improving skin photoaging!
